Guns, God, and Oil: Filming the Middle East Beyond the Headlines

Field notes from 96 countries: What it’s really like to document the shifting power structures of Israel and Saudi Arabia.

WATCH THE CHANNELTHE FIELD SYSTEM

In 2026, the Middle East is no longer just a region of conflict—it is the world’s most intense laboratory for control, ambition, and technological surveillance. When I set out to film Guns, God & Oil, I wasn’t looking for the standard news cycle. I wanted to see the systems that dictate how millions of people move, believe, and survive.

Traveling through 96 countries has taught me one thing: The more a system tightens, the more "Low-Signature" you must become. In Israel and Saudi Arabia, your biggest threat isn't always a physical one—it's a digital and bureaucratic one. If you move like a tourist, you are handled like one. If you move with purpose, you need the gear to back it up.

OPERATIONAL WARNING: In controlled zones, your gear is either your greatest asset or your biggest liability. There is no middle ground.

I. Israel: The Architecture of Security

Filming in Israel is a masterclass in navigating high-friction environments. It is a land where security is baked into the architecture. From the moment you land at Ben Gurion, you are being assessed. For a documentary filmmaker, this presents a unique challenge: How do you carry $10k in gear without triggering the "red light" at every checkpoint?

The key is Signature Management. In Israel, I relied on the TREKARIUS 35L because it lacks the "tactical" look that draws immediate suspicion from IDF or local police. It looks like a standard travel pack, but its internal organization allows me to clear security fast. When every bag is being searched, speed is your best friend.

Lessons from the Ground in Israel:

  • Digital History: Your phone is a border crossing in itself. Expect it to be scrutinized.
  • Permission vs. Forgiveness: In many sensitive zones, the "rules" are fluid. You need local contacts who understand the unspoken boundaries.
  • Red Zones: Movement in and out of the West Bank requires a specialized protocol. It is a dance between two different systems of control.

II. Saudi Arabia: The Oil and the Ambition

Saudi Arabia is the polar opposite of Israel, yet equally controlled. It is a kingdom in the midst of a massive social pivot. The "Oil" is funding "Vision 2030," but the "God" (the traditional structure) still dictates the rhythm of the streets.

Filming here requires a different kind of license. You are often welcome, but you are monitored. The risk here is bureaucratic. Photography rules are strict; filming a government building or even certain public spaces can result in an immediate shutdown of your production. You must move with a guide, or move with extreme discretion.

"In Saudi, the change is fast, but the memory of the old ways is long. You are filming the birth of a new world, but the old world is still watching."

III. The Gear Protocol: Why the 35L Survives

When I was moving between the heat of the Saudi desert and the urban density of Jerusalem, I realized why I built the TREKARIUS system. Most bags fail because they are "one-trick ponies." They are either too bulky for the city or too flimsy for the field.

The Middle East demands gear that is Weather-Resistant (sand and humidity) and Secure (anti-theft). In crowded souks or at heavy checkpoints, I need my valuables against my body, not in a dangling front pocket. This is why the 35L has a dedicated, hidden security architecture.

V. The Future of Field Documentation

As independent creators, we are moving into a more difficult era. YouTube demonetization is a hurdle, but the real challenge is access. Governments are becoming more protective of their "brand." They want the glossy travel vloggers, not the documentary filmmakers asking hard questions.

The only way to survive is to build your own infrastructure. That means owning your audience, owning your gear, and having the field-tested experience to move where others won't. The mission is far from over.
